What Is the Car on Paper Right Now?
Start with the title and current RMV status. A dead transmission or severe collision damage does not automatically mean the car has a salvage or JUNK record.
Massachusetts generally treats an insurance total loss through its salvage system, but there are exceptions. The RMV says passenger vehicles 10 or more years old at the time of loss are exempt from the standard salvage process. A repairable salvage vehicle can return to registration only after the required repair and salvage inspection. A parts-only salvage vehicle cannot be registered again in Massachusetts. If an insurer totaled the car, say so when requesting an offer. If no insurer was involved and the vehicle simply became too expensive to repair, describe the title you actually have rather than guessing at a new classification.
Don’t Make a Permanent Junk Decision Too Early
“Junk car” is everyday language. JUNK is an official Massachusetts vehicle status, and it is permanent.
The RMV says a vehicle taken for junking or scrapping has its ownership document surrendered for cancellation, after which the record is marked JUNK. Once that happens, the vehicle can never again be titled or registered in Massachusetts.

Tell Us What Actually Happened to the Car
Don’t tell us only that the car is “junk.” Tell us what broke. A complete car with a failed transmission, keys, and four wheels is a different offer and pickup from one that has been partly dismantled and cannot roll.
- Year, make, model, and approximate mileage

- Known major mechanical, structural, or collision damage
- Missing wheels, catalytic converter, battery, or other major components

Free towing is included for vehicles purchased, but access still matters. Mention a low garage, locked steering, missing wheels, a gated lot, a repair facility that must release the vehicle, soft ground, or another car blocking the way before pickup is arranged.

After the Sale, Close Out the Registration
The car leaving your driveway does not automatically close the RMV record.
If you no longer own the vehicle and are not transferring the registration, Massachusetts provides an online cancellation process. The RMV says plates do not need to be returned after cancellation; they should be destroyed or recycled. Keep the cancellation receipt.
There is also an important excise-tax distinction. If you no longer own the vehicle, you may qualify for a local motor-vehicle excise abatement, but canceling the registration alone does not create one.
